Twitterism: Update Your Friends Via SMS Messaging

Twitter can be the perfect tool for communicating within an NGO or a communal context.
Rather than using this micro-blogging service to merely update friends on personal matters, use it to send out security alerts in case of crisis.
Ask for help and collaboration, or inform them about shared events, especially when you can forward updates to added members via SMS.

Much like bulk messaging, Twitter can transmit mass messages to your friends; if they choose to receive your posts on their private phone that is.
Therefore, when you provide Twitter with a cell phone number, you can “follow” individual users, even if you are not friends with them. By choosing to follow a user, you will be notified by phone, or instant messaging, any time that person posts a new tweet.

If you want to receive free alerts from Social Media Exchange–or any other friend on Twitter—follow the below steps:

Twitter is no longer delivering outbound SMS in some countries mainly because it’s costing them a lot of money to channel your messages for free. They’ve tried reaching an agreement with mobile operators from around the globe, but their plan did not work.
In order to cut down on the budget, they decided to stop SMS messaging in corresponding countries. Hopefully, they’ll find a way to get through this and we’ll get to uses their free services again!
